Neighbourhoods Susceptible to flooding in San Francisco

The San Francisco Bay Area is a prevalent region in California with many innovative tech startups, as well as major companies that have made immense contribution to the world. Due to its geographical location and proximity to the ocean, some neighbourhoods, and locations within the Bay Area are more susceptible to flooding than other areas.

As you can see from the map below, some of the neighbourhoods that have been identified as more vulnerable to flooding in the San Francisco Bay Area include:

  1. Embarcadero: Located along the eastern waterfront of San Francisco and prone to flooding due to the low elevation of the area, and proximity to the Bay.

  2. Mission Bay: Located in San Francisco's southeastern block and built on reclaimed land, causing increased flooding during heavy rains and high tides.

  3. Oakland Estuary: A narrow channel connecting Oakland's Inner Harbor to the San Francisco Bay, and it is prone to flooding because of the area's low elevation and narrow width.

  4. Alviso: Located in the northern block of San Jose and surrounded by the San Francisco Bay and a few rivers, leading to vulnerability of flooding during heavy rains.

  5. North Richmond: Located in Contra Costa County and the area is susceptible to flooding because of its proximity to the San Pablo Bay and a few creeks.

In conclusion, many factors contribute to the flood susceptibility in neighbourhood, which includes elevation, proximity to water features, and infrastructures such as drainage systems. It is crucial for residents and authorities in the area to be aware of the mentioned factors and takes measures to mitigate the flood risk..

The line shown on the map below joins the various neighbourhoods on the map with the same predicted flood susceptibility score, therefore highlighting the neighbourhoods that are most susceptible to flooding. The visualization of the map in San Francisco, policymakers and planners can identify areas that require more attention and resources for flood mitigation and emergency planning.
